Making the most of our conversations

The topic of reconciliation can be confronting, hearing stories and experiences of racism for example can be traumatic for some people and sometimes the challenge can seem overwhelming.

To ensure that everyone feels they can contribute freely to the roundtable discussions we ask that participants agree to the discussion guidelines below:

  • Listen—Listen with empathy and respect to seek understanding and insight.
  • Respect—Choose behaviours that are open, respectful and kind—we are here to deepen our understanding and create a more just and inclusive future.
  • Diversity—Recognise individual differences and life experience.
  • Confidentiality—Share information, stories and examples from personal and professional experiences in your discussion and agree to protect personal details.
  • Courage—Welcome contributions that express different views, ask challenging questions and share different perspectives.
  • Support—Seek help from the Symposium Facilitators (Jo and Catharine) if discussions become difficult or you grapple with any of the content—we are here to support you.
  • Cultural Safety—Cultural safety is demonstrated through shared respect, meaning and knowledge, the experience of learning together with dignity, and the act of truly listening. This involves addressing unconscious bias, racism and discrimination and supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander self-determination.
